Shakhtar Donetsk vs Real Madrid – UEFA Champions League Match Preview, Kick-Off Time & Match Prediction

Group B Match Day 5 encounter, with Shakhtar Donetsk taking on Real Madrid on Tuesday the 1st of November, 2020, at NSK Olimpijs'kyj.

This feels… ironic… Shakhtar Donetsk are third in the group table with Inter Milan below them, despite the fact that they lost their last two group matches by a total score of 0-10(!!), not to… Real Madrid, but to Gladbach… And yet, they are above Inter in the table… Their current form reads; WLDWL. They last played on Saturday, they beat Dnipro-1 0-1 away from home in Ukraine’s championship. Last week, they got embarrassed in Germany, losing 4-0 to Gladbach, getting stuck on four points in this group, now from four matches. Second-placed Real Madrid are three points ahead of them, so this is their opportunity to go after their last mathematical chances of qualifying for the last 16. Realistically, after losing BIG to Gladbach twice, Shakhtar’s target has to be to finish third, above Inter, so as to play Europa League football in the first half of 2021. Coach Luis Castro played a 4-3-3- formation in Germany last week, seeing his team lose 3-0 already at halftime...

Even more irony… Real Madrid faced Inter Milan in back-to-back matches, having just one point form their first two games against the theoretically weaker sides in this group, Shakhtar and Gladbach. In true… Real Madrid style, the Merengues rose to the occasion, getting the maximum out of their two games versus Inter, beating them 3-2 in Madrid and 0-2 in Milan, last week. On seven points, they are second in the table, one point behind leaders Gladbach, and, more importantly, three ahead of third-placed Shakhtar. Their current form reads; LWDLW. They last played on Saturday, they lost 1-2 at home to Deportivo Alavés(!), in La Liga. Coach Zinedine Zidane played a 4-2-3-1 formation against Inter last week. Eden Hazard scored the opener from the penalty spot, but he got injured on Saturday, and had to get substituted.

Shakhtar have hosted Real Madrid once before, in 2015; the Merengues won that game, 3-4(!).

Given how Shakhtar have looked recently, expecting them to earn anything out of this game feels rather far-fetched...

A 1-3 victory for Real Madrid is predicted at full-time.

Date: Tuesday, 1st of November, 2020.

Venue: NSK Olimpijs'kyj

Kick-off time: 18:55 (GMT+2).
