Barcelona vs Espanyol – La Liga Match Preview, Kick-Off Time & Match Prediction

Match Day 35 continues with Barcelona taking on Espanyol on Wednesday the 8th of July, 2020, at Camp Nou.

Barcelona visited super in-form Villarreal on Sunday knowing that Real Madrid had beaten Athletic Club in Bilbao a couple of hours earlier, in other words the Merengues had escaped with all three points from a stadium where Barcelona were hoping to see the La Liga leaders drop points, but despite their disappointment, the Blaugrana shined on the pitch. Final score, 1-4(!). Their current form reads; WDDWD. Following Sunday’s matches Barcelona were second on the table, on 73 points from 34 games, four points behind leaders Real Madrid. Barcelona have 22W, 7D and 5L, having scored 78 goals and conceded 36, which leaves them with a 42GD. They have scored 16 whole goals more than Real Madrid, but those 36 they have conceded, more than one per game, is… almost shocking. Coach Quique Setién played a 4-1-2-3 (kind of) against Villarreal, with Antoine Griezmann in the starting lineup. The Frenchman scored a marvelous goal, and so did Luis Suárez. Ansu Fati celebrated his 6th goal of the season in 21 games, while Barcelona’s first goal on Sunday was actually an own goal, scored by a Villarreal defender. Lionel Messi did not score, but had two assists.

Game over for Espanyol. With four rounds of matches left to play following Sunday’s games, they were 11 whole points behind Celta, the first team above the relegation line, admitting that nothing could save them from going down. On Sunday they “managed” to lose to Leganés 0-1 at home, their fifth defeat in a row. On 24 points from 34 games, they are at the very bottom of the table, knowing that next season they won’t be playing among Spain’s top teams. Their current form reads; LLLLL. Espanyol have 5W, 9D and 20L, having scored 27 goals and conceded 54, which leaves them with a -27GD. Coach Rufete played a 4-4-2 formation against Leganés. Truth is, Espanyol did not deserve to lose, a draw would have been a more fair result, but… even that, wouldn’t have made any real difference.

The reverse fixture, which took place in January this year, was an unexpected 2-2 draw. Last season, Barcelona beat Espanyol twice, 2-0 at home, and 0-4 as guests.

Any other result but a Barcelona win would be… the surprise of the season.

A 4-0 victory for Barcelona is predicted at full-time.

Date: Wednesday, 8th of July, 2020.

Venue: Camp Nou

Kick-off time: 22:00 (GMT+2).
