Hellas Verona vs Roma – Serie A Match Preview, Kick-Off Time & Match Prediction

Match Day 1 continues with Hellas Verona taking on Roma on Saturday the 19th of September, 2020, at Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi.

Verona’s last season was more than… respectable, finishing 9th, pretty much touching their ceiling, based on their roster. Actually, someone could say they overachieved, earning more than what their roster – seemingly - “justified”. In 38 league matches they had 12W, 13D and 13L, scoring 47 goals and conceding 51. Their current form reads; LWLWL. Coach Ivan Juric has been in charge since July 2019, so this will be his second season at the helm. Verona spent a total of 7.5m euros on right-back Kevin Rüegg, centre-back Koray Günter, and defensive midfielder Adrien Tamèze. Two more guys they signed on loan are also defenders.

Roma finished last season strong, winning four games in a row in the Serie A, but the… ship for a top four spot had already sailed. They finished 5th, having to settle for a Europa League ticket. In 38 league matches they had 21W, 7D and 10L, scoring 77 goals and conceding 51. Their current form reads; DWWLW. Coach Paulo Fonseca has been in charge since July 2019. He still doesn’t know if he will have captain Edin Dzeko available the entire season, as the Bosnian has been heavily linked with a move elsewhere. For the time being, he remains an AS Roma player. Central midfielder Jordan Veretout has been Roma’s most expensive acquisition thus far this summer (16m euros, from Fiorentina). They also signed centre-back Gianluca Mancini from Atalanta, and Pedro on a free transfer from Chelsea. Plus, they kept both Carles Pérez (he played for them on loan from Barcelona last season, and they bought his rights for 11m euros), and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (another player who spent last season on loan at Roma, and is now a “proper” Roma player).

Last season, Roma beat Verona twice, 2-1 at home, and 1-3 as guests. Actually, Roma’s consecutive victories over Verona are now four.

There is no doubt Roma have a much stronger/fuller roster, but that does not necessarily win you matches. They have to start with their foot on the gas to beat Verona.

A 1-2 victory for X is predicted at full-time.
