Union Berlin vs Augsburg – Bundesliga Match Preview, Kick-Off Time & Match Prediction

Match Day 1 continues with Union Berlin taking on Augsburg on Saturday the 19th of September, 2020, at Stadion An der Alten Försterei.

Union Berlin didn’t just avoid relegation last season, but did so… comfortably, finishing 11th, 10 whole points ahead of 16th-placed Werder Bremen, the team that had to go through playoffs to stay in the Bundesliga. In 34 league matches, Union had 12W, 5D and 17L, scoring 41 goals and conceding 58. Obviously, they could have scored more, that’s an area they need to improve on, but as previously mentioned, 11th at the end of the season, not bad, not bad at all… Last weekend they beat Karlsruher SC 0-1 in the German Cup, scoring the winner in the 117th minute(!), just before the end of extra-time. It was 20-year-old centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck who sent the ball in. Their current form reads; WWDLL. Coach Urs Fischer has been in charge since July 2018, so this will be his third season at the helm.

Augsburg finished just 15th last season in the Bundesliga, but at least they didn’t worry on the last day of the season, as they had already secured their stay, mathematically. In 34 league matches they had 9W, 9D and 16L, scoring 45 goals and conceding 63. Last weekend they destroyed Eintracht Celle in the German Cup, beating them 0-7(!). Interestingly, the score was at just 0-2 at halftime. Their current form reads; WLDWW. Coach Heiko Herrlich has been in charge since March this year, he took over right when the season got put on “pause” because of Covid-19. Augsburg spent 7m euros to sign 23-year-old centre-back Felix Uduokhai from Werder Bremen. He spent last season with them in Bavaria, did well, started in 21 of the 26 games in which he played, so Augsburg decided to… go for it. They signed more players, and among them, midfielder Daniel Caligiuri, who was left free from Schalke.

Last season, Union beat Augsburg 2-0 in Berlin. The other game between these two was a 1-1 draw.

Union seem to have a slight advantage.

A 1-0 victory for the hosts is predicted at full-time.

Date: Saturday, 19th of September, 2020.

Venue: Stadion An der Alten Försterei

Kick-off time: 15:30 (GMT+2).
