Servette vs Reims – Europa League Match Preview, Kick-Off Time & Match Prediction

Second qualifying round knockout match, with Servette taking on Reims on Thursday the 17th of September, 2020, at Stade de Genève.

Servette faced Ružomberok in the first qualifying round, got stuck to 0-0 in the first half, but… simplified things in the second one, taking the lead in the 54th minute, and then scoring twice more. That was on August 27. They have not played an official match since then, as the new season in Switzerland has not started yet (it does, the coming weekend). Their current form reads; WWWLL. Coach Alain Geiger (in charge since July 2018) would have loved some… significant additions to the team’s roster, but what Servette have mostly done these last weeks is promote youngsters from the second team. Alexis Antunes, the 20-year-old attacking midfielder who scored the third goal against Ružomberok, is one of the… countless youngsters Servette have, counting on them not only to help produce results on the pitch, but also bring in much-needed funds once moved to other, bigger clubs.

Reims did not have to play in the first qualifying round, but they already have three official matches under their belt at the start of this new season, as the championship in France started something over three weeks ago. Last weekend they lost 1-0 at Angers, having to play with ten men for more than 50 minutes. Angers lost a player as well, in the 60th minute, but by then, they had already taken the lead. Reims’ current form reads; LLDWW. For their first three appearances in the Ligue 1 this season, all they have to show is a single point. Coach David Guion (in charge since May 2017) must be satisfied with how the club have done thus far in the transfer market, but the results in the championship up to now have just not been good enough. Reaching the Europa League group stage would guarantee the club much-needed money.

Servette have faced five French teams in the past, but Reims are not among them.

Very interesting game, between a relatively clear favourite, Reims, and a team that has the ambition and the talent to surprise their guests. If the games were two, home and away, Reims’ advantage would be stronger. Now, in a single match, played in Switzerland (even without fans), Servette have every reason to dream.

A 1-1 draw is predicted at full-time, and a Reims win either in extra-time or on penalties.

Date: Thursday, 17th of September, 2020.

Venue: Stade de Genève

Kick-off time: 20:45 (GMT+2).
