AFL GRAND FINAL

RICHMOND TIGERS VS GEELONG CATS

SATURDAY OCTOBER 24, 6.30, GABBA, BRISBANE

After 17 games of regular season play and 6 finals matches between them, it all comes down to these two sides, who have some of the superstars of this generation, and will surely put on a memorable spectacle in the historic Grand Final.  Yes, Brisbane is the host of the Grand Final for the AFL this season, due to the pandemonium in the southern states, with Covid-19 troubling them so much, all of the Melbourne clubs had to play away from home all season long.  Richmond finished 3rd with 12 wins and a draw in the regular season, and then defeated St Kilda and Port after losing against Brisbane in week 1.  While Geelong similarly finished 4th with 12 wins, then lost to Port in week 1 of the finals, only to go on and defeat Collingwood and Brisbane handsomely, to set up this cracking clash.  Unfortunately, the lateness in the year for this Final, which was unavoidable, means less than great conditions for AFL will greet the players on their big day, with Storms and hot weather predicted.

Both sides are seemingly settled with the team-sheets they will go into the biggest match of the season with, as there are no speculative changes at this stage, though anything can happen in the warmup, with nerves sure to be visible.  Last week Geelong’s ruckman Rhys Stanley had a huge task when taking on the Lions and Stefan Martin, this week gets no easier, as he will face rising stock in the rucking ranks, named Nankervis, who is a proven big game star.  Dustin Martin won best on the field (the Norm Smith medal) last season and will be out to go back to back as he is among the key midfielders for Richmond.  While Geelong are stacked with key midfielders, none are as good a quality as Dangerfield, who won the Brownlow Medal in 2016, and would love to add a premiership to his accomplishments while he is in the prime of his career at 30 years of age.

These sides met 6 weeks ago in the regular season, with a late season doozy, as Richmond dominated the Cats to gain a 26-point victory, holding Geelong to just 4 goals on the day.  The marquee household names of Richmond prevailed that day, with Riewoldt and Martin, proving too good, holding Geelong to just 10 points in the opening half, while Dangerfield and Stewart tried hard for the Cats.  Bookmakers are having difficulty splitting these sides, suggesting a 1.5-point margin is the handicap figure, while Richmond are $1.85 for the win, and Geelong are just out at $2.05.  It would be an incredible 3rd premiership in 4 years for Richmond if they can get the job done, while despite being perennial contenders Geelong haven’t lifted the trophy since 2011.

PREDICTION: Richmond to win by a kick or two, less than 12 points.

BETTING TIP: $2.10 for the Tigers to win by 1-39 is fine odds, though if you prefer the Cats they are $2.30 in the same market.
