AFL ROUND 10

RICHMOND TIGERS VS BRISBANE LIONS

TUESDAY AUGUST 4, 7.10 PM, METRICON STADIUM, GOLD COAST

The battle of the large cats takes over TV viewing rights on Tuesday evening, with this blockbuster set to test the Lions credentials for their 2020 campaign against the reigning Premiers.  Richmond will be fresh, as they have enjoyed a 6-day break in bubble camp, knowing they will need to step it up a notch against the equal leading club in the competition, after they impressed against the Bulldogs.  Brisbane played Friday so have a full 48-hours less prep time in this compressed schedule games, but showed their prowess with a 63-point belting of Essendon who are still in the top 8 conversation.  More ideal conditions await these players and the crowd that should be fairly sizable, given Brisbane’s growing popularity and the status of Richmond, after Queensland was cleared of Covid-19 cases again today.

Vlastuin comes back into the Richmond side and celebrates his 150th match with the Tigers, slotting straight back into Centre Half Back, at the expense of Oleg Markov.  The corresponding move sees Liam Baker bounce back to the interchange role, though he will be delighted to get more experience in his 3rd season.  Only one other matchup adjustment has been made with the Forwards re-aligning, that sees Castagna move from Half Forward to Forward Pocket, with Lynch moving to his position from Full Forward and Martin taking Lynch’s previous position with Riewoldt bumping across to Forward pocket.  Grand Birchall has been rested by the Lions as Jack Payne is set to debut at Centre Half Back, a big-bodied key Defender from Noosa, drafted in 2017.

The Lions don’t have a great record against Richmond, winning just 16 and drawing 1 in 48 games since they came into the AFL, and it was not a happy ending last year.  They met in the Finals, when Richmond flogged them by 47, kicking 18 goals to 8, and earlier in the year they missed out on the Minor Premiership, as Richmond won by 27 at the MCG.  Brisbane are slight favourites for this clash at $1.87 while the Tigers are just back on $1.95 with a measly 1.5-points predicted margin.  It would indeed be sweet revenge to some extent for the Lions, or a cruel blow to their Minor Premiership standings yet again; this one adds a whole new meaning to tight Tuesday.

PREDICTION: Lions by a goal or two.

BETTING TIP: All indications are it will be close, so bet margin 1-39, if you like Brisbane ($2.15) or Richmond ($2.25) both are decent value.
