Rennes vs Angers – Ligue 1 Match Preview, Kick-Off Time & Match Prediction

Match Day 8 encounter, with Rennes taking on Angers on Friday the 23rd of October, 2020, at Roazhon Park.

Rennes should have done better at Dijon last weekend. They took the lead in the first half, but looked rather complacent after that, and only got… serious again after getting equalized in the 54th minute. Given the chances they had to score in the last half hour, someone could say they deserved to win, but… at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is how many times you’ve sent the ball in… Final score, 1-1. Their current form reads; DDWDW. Of course, midweek, they debuted in the Champions League group stage, drawing 1-1 with Krasnodar at home, yet another game in which they should have done better, given Krasnodar’s countless problems with players missing due to positive Covid-19 tests. Rennes are on 15 points from seven Ligue 1 matches, third on the table, two points behind leaders Lille. They have 4W and 3D (only they and Lille remain unbeaten), with 15 goals scored and eight conceded. Coach Julien Stéphan played a 4-3-3 formation last weekend. Winger Martin Terrier scored Rennes’ goal against Dijon. Midweek, it was Serhou Guirassy who scored from the penalty spot.

Angers hosted Metz last weekend, took the lead from the penalty spot in the 38th minute, but got equalized less than 60 seconds later(!), and that 1-1 did not change until the final whistle. Both teams had chances to win the game, so the final score felt somewhat fair, as you can’t really say that one deserved all three points more than the other. Angers’ current form reads; DWLWL. They are on 10 points from seven matches in Ligue 1, having 3W, 1D and 3L. Goals, eight scored, 15(!) conceded. Only Strasbourg have conceded more (16) than Angers thus far. Coach Stéphane Moulin played a 4-1-4-1 formation against Metz, with Loïs Diony up front. Thomas Mangani scored Angers’ goal from the penalty spot to give his team a super short-lived lead.

Rennes beat Angers 2-1 at home last season in Ligue 1. The reverse fixture did not take place. Rennes beat Angers in the Coupe de France as well, 4-5(!), in extra-time, in January this year.

This is going to be tricky for Rennes… They played against Krasnodar midweek, and have a trip to Seville in a few days, for their second Champions League group stage game. They have already dropped four points against teams low on the table, teams weaker than Angers...

A 1-1 draw is predicted at full-time.
