Rosenborg vs PSV – Europa League Match Preview, Kick-Off Time & Match Prediction

Knockout playoff match, with Rosenborg taking on PSV on Thursday the 1st of October, 2020, at Lerkendal Stadion.

Rosenborg started their Europa League adventure this season in the first qualifying round, where they beat Breidablik 4-2, late August. Two weeks ago they beat Ventspils as well, 1-5, in the second qualifying round. Last week, the toughest test of the three, a 1-0 win at home over Alanyaspor, thanks to a goal in the 59th minute. They were reduced to 10 men in the 66th, but managed to protect their narrow lead. On Sunday they visited Aalesund for Norway’s championship, yet another victory, 1-2. Their current form reads; WWWWD. In their championship they are second, on 35 points from 19 matches, 18 whole points behind leaders Bodø / Glimt. Coach Age Hareide has been in charge for exactly a month now. He was Denmark’s national coach until the end of July. Defensive midfielder Anders Konradsen, the guy who scored against Alanyaspor last week, is also the one who got sent-off a few minutes later.

Unlike Rosenborg who have already eliminated three opponents in the Europa League qualifiers, PSV entered the competition last week, in the third qualifying round. They visited Mura, and won easily, 1-5, despite getting equalized 1-1 in the 21st minute. Striker Donyell Malen and winger Cody Gakpo scored two goals each (both youngsters, at 21), with attacking midfielder Mauro Júnior adding another one (yet another 21-year-old). PSV visited Heracles on Sunday, and dropped their first points in the Netherlands’ championship. They drew 1-1. Their current form reads; DWWWD. Coach Roger Schmidt has been in charge since the 1st of July. The German coach received a good deal of criticism for his choices on Sunday, with former PSV players expressing their… surprise. Schmidt blamed the “many personal duels lost” for the two points wasted.

Rosenborg and PSV have played against each other four times in the past. Back in 2004, in the Champions League group stage, PSV won 1-0 at home and 1-2 as guests. They met again last season, in the Europa League group stage. Another away win for PSV, but the game in Eindhoven ended in a 1-1 draw.

There is no doubt PSV have a far better roster than that of Rosenborg. One way or another, they should win and make it to the Europa League group stage.

A 1-2 victory for PSV is predicted at full-time.
