NRL ROUND 13

PENRITH PANTHERS VS CANBERRA RAIDERS

SATURDAY AUGUST 8, 7.35 PM, PANTHERS STADIUM, SYDNEY

The nightcap for Saturday is an out and out blockbusting affair, perhaps one of the games of the season, which sees the top of the table Panthers tackle last years Grand Finalists Canberra, a rematch of the 1991 Grand Final.  Penrith have been in scintillating form lately, exemplified by their 30-point pulverising of Manly at their home ground, and are genuine Premiership contenders, with odds of $5.00 perhaps being a little over, so great value.  Canberra have good form too after winning a tricky trip to North Queensland who gave them plenty of headaches, as they do anyone when Taumalolo is in the mood.  A win for Canberra here sees them continue to hold 5th comfortably, and keep within a game of the Chooks in 4th, while a loss could see Cronulla catch up to them, while its similar for Penrith who need to win to keep top position.

Staines did an admirable job for Penrith, but is not included in this team as Malakai Watene-Zelezniak is preferred on the Wing outside Crichton.  That is the only change for Penrith, who are looking to equal their club record of 8 straight wins, which they recorded in 2003, the last time they won the Premiership.  Despite a gruesome finger injury, Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad is back at Fullback, which forces Rapana to the wing after a fine game in the 1 jersey, Valemai misses out.  Oldfield is fit too, but stands little chance of moving into an active position, after being named as a reserve, and four solid interchange players ahead of him.

Canberra were the better side in 2019, and this was reflected in their matches, as they won both, in round 19 it was a score of 30-18, with Englishman Bateman excelling as they ran in 6 tries to 3.  Back in round 8 Canberra won 30-12, though it was a 4 tries to 2 win against a flagrant Penrith side who gave away far to many penalties, with Papalii and Soliola excelling, while Tamou was strong for Penrith.  Incredibly, Penrith are $1.48 favourites for this clash with Canberra hit hard in the market for being the visitors at $2.65, despite just a 6-point predicted margin.  Canberra are on a mission in 2020 after the so-close Grand Final loss against the Roosters, while Penrith are surely capable of stopping them, this game will go a long way to deciding which is better.

PREDICTION: Canberra to upset the Black Cats by 4-6, in a blockbuster.

BETTING TIP: Unlikely to be a blowout, so pick your team to win by 1-12, Canberra are @$3.70, Penrith is $2.85.
