Maccabi Tel Aviv vs Salzburg – UEFA Champions League Match Preview, Kick-Off Time & Match Prediction

First leg of the playoff round, with Maccabi Tel Aviv taking on Salzburg on Tuesday the 22nd of September, 2020, at the Bloomfield Stadium.

On Sunday, about 60 hours before kickoff, Maccabi Tel Aviv announced that six players and seven staff members had tested positive for Covid-19. New tests were to be done Monday morning, to make sure that no other players carried the virus. Maccabi are one of the teams that had to start their Champions League adventure this summer in the first qualifying round, against Riga. They did well, beat them 2-0, and did even better against Sūduva in the second round, registering a 0-3 victory. Last week they hosted Dinamo Brest, and things proved much harder. They needed a penalty kick in the 50th minute to break the deadlock. That proved to be the only goal of the match. No game last weekend for them in Israel’s championship. Their current form reads; WDLWW. Coach Yorgos Donis chose a 5-3-2 formation. Attacking midfielder Dan Biton was the one whose scored from the penalty spot. He arrived recently from Ludogorets, on loan, for one season. Last week’s was his second goal in a UEFA competition, he had one with Ludogorets as well, last season.

Unlike Maccabi, Salzburg did not have to play in any qualifying round. Their first official match of the season was a resounding 0-10(!) victory over Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz in Austria’s Cup two weeks ago. Since then, they have played twice in their championship, winning both games, by a total score of 7-2. Their current form reads; WWWWD. Coach Jesse Marsch has been in charge since July 2019. Salzburg got 15m euros from RB Leipzig for striker Hee-chan Hwang. Up to now they have… re-invested 5.5m euros, signing centre-back Oumar Solet from Lyon, and defensive midfielder Samson Tijani from a Nigerian club called Collins Edwin.

This is the first game ever between these two. Maccabi have faced Altach in the past (one win and a draw), but no other team from Austria. Salzburg on the other hand, have two wins, a draw, and three defeats, against two other Israeli teams, Hapoel Tel Aviv and Maccabi Haifa.

Salzburg should score, and most probably avoid defeat.

A 1-1 draw is predicted at full-time.

Date: Tuesday, 22nd of September, 2020.

Venue: Bloomfield Stadium

Kick-off time: 21:00 (GMT+2).
