Honved vs Malmo – Europa League Match Preview, Kick-Off Time & Match Prediction

Second qualifying round knockout match, with Honved taking on Malmo on Thursday the 17th of September, 2020, at Hidegkuti Nándor Stadion, in Budapest.

Honved played their part in producing a memorable first qualifying round match against Inter Turku from Finland. They took the lead in added time (1-0), got equalized(!), and then scored again in the 105th minute, thanks to an Inter Turku own-goal. Their current form reads; WLWLL. Last weekend they beat Diósgyőr 2-4(!), to earn their first three points (from three matches) in Hungary’s championship. Coach Tamás Bódog has been in charge since July. Dániel Gazdag, the 24-year-old central midfielder who scored two of their four goals last weekend, is one of the many youngsters on whom Bódog is counting on to produce good results this season. Last year he finished on five goals from 24 appearances in Hungary’s championship, and he already has three from as many games at the start of this new season.

Just like Honved, Malmo had to play in the first qualifying round. Their mission against Cracovia proved much easier than that of the Hungarians. They took a 2-0 lead at halftime, and that was the final score as well. Their current form reads; DLDWW. They are leading in Sweden’s championship, on 40 points from 20 matches, six points ahead of second-placed Hacken (who have a game in hand though). Despite topping the table, it should be mentioned that Malmo have earned just two points from their last three games, right before and after the international break. Last weekend they drew without goals at home with AIK. Coach Jon Dahl Tomasson has been in charge since January this year.

Interestingly, Honved have never faced a team from Sweden before. Malmo on the other hand, have two wins, three draws, and three defeats in eight matches against three different Hungarian teams.

Theoretically, Malmo have a better roster than Honved, plus, they are leading in Sweden’s championship, but lately they have left a lot to be desired.

A 1-1 draw is predicted at full-time, and a Malmo win either in extra-time or on penalties.

Date: Thursday, 17th of September, 2020.

Venue: Hidegkuti Nándor Stadion

Kick-off time: 21:05 (GMT+2).
