Neftci Baku vs Galatasaray – Europa League Match Preview, Kick-Off Time & Match Prediction

Second qualifying round knockout match, with Neftci Baku taking on Galatasaray on Thursday the 17th of September, 2020, at Baku’s Olympic Stadium.

Neftci were expected to eliminate Shkupi rather easily in the first round, but they ended up struggling. They took the lead in the 66th minute, saw their opponents get reduced to 10 men right after that, but didn’t really finish the game off until the 88th minute, with their second goal. Actually, they conceded in added time, but avoided… further embarrassment (2-1). Their current form reads; LWWWD. That “L” came last weekend in Azerbaijan’s championship, as Neftci lost 0-2 to Sumqayıt. They are now on three points from their first two games there. Coach Fuzuli Mammadov (in charge since January this year) looked pumped in the Press conference ahead of this game, looking straight into the TV cameras saying Neftci do have what it takes to produce a surprise, facilitated by the fact that this is a knockout match.

Unlike their hosts, Galatasaray did not have to play in the first qualifying round. Last weekend they played their first official match in seven weeks, beating Gaziantep 3-1 at home, on their debut in Turkey’s championship. They were 3-0 up at halftime, which gives you an idea how the game went. Their current form reads; WDWWD. Coach Fatih Terim (in charge since December 2017) knows that his team simply cannot afford to fail in this game. Galatasaray are expected not just to reach the group stage, but still be active in the competition in the round of 32 (minimum). Arda Turan played his first official match for Galatasaray in nine years last weekend. He returned to the club with which he became famous, after nine years at Atlético Madrid, Barcelona, and Istanbul Basaksehir (where he spent the last three seasons (not really playing that much though).

Neftci have never faced a team from Turkey before (in an official match).

Galatasaray should win this one. Maybe not as easily as many expect, but still, they should win and qualify. Anything else would be a massive failure.

A 0-2 victory for the visitors is predicted at full-time.

Date: Thursday, 17th of September, 2020.

Venue: Baku Olympic Stadium

Kick-off time: 18:00 (GMT+2).
