Tokyo vs Shanghai Shenhua – AFC Champions League Match Preview, Kick-Off Time & Match Prediction

Group F Match Day 3 encounter, with Tokyo taking on Shanghai Shenhua on Tuesday the 24th of November, 2020, at Education City Stadium, in Qatar.

Tokyo are on four points from two matches in this group, having drawn 1-1 in Ulsan and then beaten Perth Glory 1-0 at home. This will be their first game in Qatar. Their current form reads; DLWLL. Their last game was last Wednesday, they drew 2-2 with Vegalta Sendai in Japan’s championship. They are 5th there, but having played more games than almost all other teams, exactly because they had the trip to Qatar coming up. Coach Kenta Hasegawa said something very interesting in the Press conference the day before this game, seeing the whole idea of playing many games in a single city in a matter of a few days from a different perspective. “The good thing is that, normally if we’re in the AFC Champions League we have long-distance travel. When we go to Australia, for example, we have more than 10 hours of flying, but we don’t have this in a centralised competition. It means we feel less stress”, the Japanese coach said, obviously fancying the format the AFC chose to manage to finish this… “particular” Champions League season.

Shanghai Shenhua have already played twice in Qatar this past week; first, they beat Perth Glory’s… teenagers 2-1, rather easily, but things were totally different on Saturday, when they faced a much-much stronger team, Ulsan Hyundai. Something over an hour into the game they were losing 3-0, and all they managed was to score a late consolation goal. They are on three points from two matches in this group, third on the table, behind Ulsan and Tokyo. Their current form reads; LWWWL. Coach Choi Kang-hee told reporters the day before this game that he had to wait until the last moment to decide on his first 11, because tactics and game strategy-aside, his choices regarding the starting lineup depended mostly on who is fit enough, and who not.

This is the first game ever between these two.

If both teams had their best possible 11 on the pitch, Shanghai Shenhua would have a 50% chance of winning the game. Now… much less than that.

A 2-1 victory for Tokyo is predicted at full-time.

Date: Tuesday, 24th of October, 2020.

Venue: Education City Stadium

Kick-off time: 11:00 (GMT+2).
