Espanyol vs Eibar – La Liga Match Preview, Kick-Off Time & Match Prediction

Match Day 36 continues with Espanyol taking on Eibar on Sunday the 12th of July, 2020, at the RCDE Stadium.

Espanyol visited city rivals Barcelona on Wednesday, lost 1-0, and became the first team to get relegated, even mathematically, to the second division. On 24 points from 35 matches, bottom-of-the-table Espanyol simply cannot cover the gap between them and the first team above the relegation line in the three rounds of matches left to play. Their current form reads; LLLLL. Actually, they haven’t lost five games in a row, but six(!). Espanyol have 5W, 9D and 21L, having scored 27 goals and conceded 55, which leaves them with a -28GD. Coach Rufete played a 5-3-2 formation against Barcelona. They actually… scared their big rivals in the first half, they had a couple of good opportunities to take the lead, but missed them. Pol Lozano got sent-off in the 53rd minute for a careless foul, very similar to the one that had “earned” Barcelona’s Ansu Fati a red card just three minutes earlier (which makes Lozano’s carelessness truly unforgivable). Barcelona scored the only goal of the match in the 56th minute.

Eibar hosted Leganés on Thursday, one of those games that you… easily forget, as very few interesting things happened in the two boxes. No score, 0-0, not a good result for Eibar, who finished Match Day 35 four points ahead of Mallorca, the first team below the relegation line. On 36 points, Eibar were 15th on the table after Thursday’s matches, not 100% safe yet. Their current form reads; DLLWW. Eibar have 9W, 9D and 17L, having scored 34 goals and conceded 51, which leaves them with a -17GD. Coach José Mendilibar played a 4-4-2 against Leganés, which didn’t help produce many scoring chances. Either way, Eibar score less than one goal per game on average, but against a team sitting lower than them on the table, they should have done better.

The reverse fixture, which took place in September 2019, was a 1-2 Espanyol victory (coming from behind). Last season, Eibar won 3-0 at home, and so did Espanyol, 1-0.

It’s all over for Espanyol, while Eibar still have everything to play for. On the other hand, the lack of pressure may help Espanyol… show things. You never know how players will react under certain circumstances...

A 1-1 draw is predicted at full-time.
