Dynamo Kyiv vs Alkmaar – Champions League Match Preview, Kick-Off Time & Match Prediction

Third qualifying round knockout match, with Dynamo Kyiv taking on Alkmaar on Tuesday the 15th of September, 2020, at NSK Olimpijs'kyj.

Dynamo finished second last season in Ukraine’s championship, 23 whole points behind champions Shakhtar Donetsk, but a couple of weeks ago they got a… mini revenge (key word: “mini”), beating them 3-1 to win Ukraine’s Super Cup. A few days earlier they had beaten Olimpik Donetsk as well (1-4) on their debut in Ukraine’s championship. Last Friday though, they got stuck to a goalless draw against Desna. Their current form reads; DWWWW. In case you missed the news, Dynamo hired former Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu back in July, only for him to resign a few days later, seeing that Dynamo’s “ultras” were strongly against him. At the end, both the Romanian coach and Dynamo’s owner decided to go on despite some fans’ reactions. The Kyiv club has stayed… rather quiet in the transfer market, most probably waiting to see if they can count on Champions League group stage money to strengthen the roster.

Unlike Dynamo, Alkmaar had to start their… CL adventure in the second qualifying round, where they went super close to getting eliminated by Viktoria Plzen. They were losing 0-1 when added time started counting, but they managed to equalize from the penalty spot, scored twice more in extra-time, and that’s how they won 3-1 and qualified for the third round. The championship in the Netherlands started last weekend, but AZ were allowed not to play, so as to focus 100% on this “final” in Kyiv. Their current form reads; DLWLW. Coach Arne Slot has been in charge since July 2019. Defensive midfielder Teun Koopmeiners is only 22, but he is Alkmaar’s captain, and kept his cool to score from the penalty spot in added time against Plzen. Then, in extra-time, it was a 23-year-old, Albert Gudmundsson, from Iceland, who scored both goals.

Dynamo and Alkmaar have met twice before, in the 2010-11 Europa League group stage, when the Ukrainian side won both games, 2-0 at home and 1-2 as guests.

It’s a knockout match, without fans, in which a single detail can make all the difference.

A 1-0 victory for Dynamo is predicted at full-time.

Date: Tuesday, 15th of September, 2020.

Venue: NSK Olimpijs'kyj

Kick-off time: 20:00 (GMT+2).
