AFL ROUND 10

COLLINGWOOD MAGPIES VS SYDNEY SWANS

THURSDAY AUGUST 6, 5.40 PM, GABBA, BRISBANE

Collingwood arrived in the Sunshine state after a terrible turmoil in the west, as the Eagles caned them and then the Dockers even stunned them, and are now desperate to turn their season around.  They are 10th after 3 losses from their past 5 games and the unthinkable – missing out on Finals footy- is fast becoming reality, unless they can turn it around, which starts here and now against Sydney.  Sydney are having a tumultuous season and find themselves in 17th with just 3 wins from 9 matches, without any glimmer of hope to play meaningful matches after a couple more, and it was exemplified in the 53-point hiding, they received from St Kilda.  Ideal conditions await with cool, dry but a little breezy conditions at the Gabba predicted, leaving no reason for anything but a spectacle from these two teams, despite poor form.

Collingwood have responded to their poor form by dropping four players, namely Mayne, Cameron, Keane and Varcoe, with 2 staying in and around the squad as emergencies.  Ben Reid comes into the squad as Full Forward, after playing 150 games, the 2nd generation veteran will look to make an impact again, after recovering from a calf issue.  Another experienced player is returning, in the shape of Jordan Roughead at Fullback, while Callum Brown, will start in the Midfield and Trey Ruscoe a East Fremantle draftee will debut as a key Defender option.  Like their opponents Sydney have made four omissions from the squad that was dismantled by St Kilda, leaving out Taylor, Blakey, Ryan Clarke and Sam Gray.  Dylan Stephens is granted a chance in the Midfield, while Jackson Thurlow will play on a flank across Half Forward.  Rookie Melican has another chance to impress, albeit starting from the pine, while Sam Wicks a small Forward sophomore is also named on the bench.

Collingwood do have a strong record against the Swans, winning 142 times and drawing once from 227 games in their long history, and indeed won the 2019 clash between the sides by just 7.  That day, in Sydney the Magpies turned a final-break deficit of 8 into a FT victory, thanks to the old firm Midfielders, Pendlebury and Treloar.  Collingwood are $1.36 favourites to belt the Swans in this game, with Sydney at $3.20 and a margin predicted of around 3 goals.  Surely, the slumber for Collingwood is over and they can overcome the ordinary Sydney Swans 2020 version, as they have their season to play for, and anything else could lead to major staff changes in the off-season.

PREDICTION: Collingwood by about 20.

BETTING TIP: $4.25 for a 40+ thumping of the Swans seems plausible and good value.
