Riga vs Celtic – Europa League Match Preview, Kick-Off Time & Match Prediction

Third qualifying round knockout match, with Riga taking on Celtic on Thursday the 24th of September, 2020, at Stadions Skonto.

Riga faced Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Champions League first qualifying round, they knew their mission was… close to impossible, and lost 2-0 indeed, no matter if both goals came in the second half from the penalty spot (yes, both). Last week they beat Tre Fiori 1-0, good enough to qualify for the EL third qualifying round. Their current form reads; WWWLW. On Sunday they hosted Valmiera / BSS in Latvia’s championship, and won 1-0. Unlike most championships in Europe that have just started, the one in Latvia has already seen 19 game weeks. Riga are leading (they have 17 wins and two defeats!), with second-placed Rīgas FS four points behind them. Coach Oleg Kononov (in charge since February this year) missed last week’s game against Tre Fiori due to “family reasons” (he had to fly back to Russia), and 48 hours before kickoff against Celtic it was unclear if he would be leading the team from the bench in this “final”.

Celtic had a pleasant two hours against KR in the Champions League first qualifying round (6-0), but in the second one, against Ferencvaros, they messed up, big time; 1-2 defeat, in Glasgow, and… goodbye dream of playing in the CL group stage. That was on August 26. In four matches since then, in Scotland’s championship, it has been nothing but… three-pointers for them, four wins in a row, so their current form reads; WWWWL. On Saturday they beat Livingston 3-2 at home, coming from 0-1 down to take a 3-1 lead, before conceding again. Coach Neil Lennon is still there, despite what happened with Ferencvaros a month ago. Albian Ajeti and Odsonne Edouard have four goals each in Celtic’s first seven matches in their championship. They are second on the table, one point behind leaders Rangers, but with a game in hand.

Riga have never faced a team from Scotland before.

If you don’t trust Celtic blindly, you’re not the only one. Even so, one way or another, they should be able to beat Riga and qualify.

A 0-1 victory for Celtic is predicted at full-time.

Date: Thursday, 24th of September, 2020.
