UK CHALLENGE CUP QUARTER FINAL

CATALANS DRAGONS VS SALFORD RED DEVILS

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 18, 6 PM, TOTALLY WICKED STADIUM, ST HELENS

Finals time in the Challenge Cup always provides fans with the dream of seeing their team win a trophy, without the season long arduous effort required to hoist the Super League, which is surely the case here for Salford.  Catalans received a check-up and were found to be insufficient in their first action after a Covid-19 forced mini-break, but will surely be ready to fire in this environment, with a Semi-Final berth on the line.  Salford will be fresh having sat out last weekends matches, due to odd numbers since Toronto’s expungement from the league, but have not tasted a win since they put 50 on Hull FC in resumption round back in early August.  Catalans did have a week where they defeated Wakefield twice before their Covid-19 issues, which booked them this Quarter Final berth, and they looked like genuine contenders in the Super League.  Good not too warm conditions await these players as they dream of going one step closer to the glory of winning the historical competition.

David Mead is a big out for the Dragons, though they are well stocked to cover the former Titan’s absence, while Tom Davies another exciting Winger formerly of Wigan, is also unavailable.  Coming into the side are former Shark/Rooster and NZ international Sam Moa, Mickey McIlorum the experienced Hooker also formerly of Wigan and Josh Drinkwater whose brother Scott is playing well for the Cowboys, also a Half.  Centre Kallum Watkins is in line to debut for Salford after signing on since Toronto’s debacle, providing some serious talent to the Backs in a boost to their stocks.  Chris Atkin a utility Half type and Dan Sarginson another outside Back who spent a little time at the Titans in the NRL are the other inclusions for Salford, while Niall Evalds, Lee Mossop and Andy Ackers are not in the side for this match.

Catalans have won the only Challenge Cup fixture between these sides, though in the Super League it is a close matchup, with the Dragons leading 15-13 and 1 draw occurring.  Back in May 2018 the Dragons won 26-12 and in July last year they showed the Red Devils how to win, belting them 44-10, in reply Salford spanked them 46-0 and 40-14 in 2019, while the latest fixture went back to Catalans who won 30-14.  Catalans are handicapped at -9.5 and $1.25 strong favourites to advance to the Semi Finals while Salford are not getting much love from the bookmakers at $4, leaving it clear the Dragons would be upset if they lost.

PREDICTION: Catalans by 12-14.

BETTING TIP: The 13+ Catalans win margin market is the most popular betting option @$2.25.
