Al Shorta vs Al Ahli – AFC Champions League Match Preview, Kick-Off Time & Match Prediction

Match Day 4 of Group A gets under way with Al Shorta taking on Al Ahli on Thursday the 17th of September, 2020, at the Khalifa International Stadium, in Doha, Qatar.

Al Shorta lost 1-0 to Al Ahli on Monday, a rather harsh result, given that it was the Iraqi side that had the two best scoring chances of the match before the 87th minute, when Al Ahli scored the winner. Plus, Al Shorta were left with 10 men in the first half’s added time, but not even that deterred them, as they had a header on the horizontal post early in the second half. Their current form reads; LDWDD. Coach Abdul-Ghani Shahad played a 4-2-3-1 formation on Monday. With Al Wahda out of the picture, as they couldn’t travel to Qatar for this mini tournament, the AFC decided to leave aside the February games in which Al Wahda participated, not take them into consideration in the group table. So, Al Shorta are on one point from two matches, same as Esteghlal, whom they still have to face in a few days. In other words, Al Shorta are still in with a chance of finishing in the top two.

Marko Marin was at the perfect spot to push the ball in in the 87th minute on Monday, giving Al Ahli all three points. They are now on six, from two matches in the group (their win over Al Wahda no longer counts), with Al Shorta and Esteghlal on just one point each. In other words, Al Ahli have already qualified for the last 16 of the competition. Even if they lose both their remaining matches and get stuck to six points, they can’t drop third. Maybe second, if either Al Shorta or Esteghlal earn the maximum from their last two games, but third, no, impossible. Their current form reads; WWLDL. Coach Vladan Milojevic played a 4-1-4-1 formation on Monday, with Marin “supporting” Al Ahli’s striker. The German never really reached the heights expected from him when he was young, at Werder Bremen, but at 31, he proved on Monday he can make the difference for Al Ahli.

Monday’s game was the first ever between these two.

Al Shorta looked very competitive on Monday, losing only because of a late goal, having playing in the entire second half with a man less. Plus, they still have a massive motive, to finish in the top two. Al Ahli have already secure a top two spot.

A 0-0 draw is predicted at full-time.
