AFL ROUND 10

ADELAIDE CROWS VS MELBOURNE DEMONS

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 5, 7.40 PM, ADELAIDE OVAL

Adelaide are still winless, but at least have the luxury of playing at home, unlike most of the league who are in bubbles, out of the main epicentres of the pandemic, that Covid-19 is damaging.  Melbourne copped a hiding of their own last weekend, and it was ugly, as the 51-point margin suggests, but they were up against Port Adelaide who are one of the leading contenders to win the title.  Truth be told, Melbourne are genuinely still in with a chance of qualifying for the top 8, as they have a game in hand, and are just 2 games out of the 8, though they need to improve now and stay good for the remainder of the home-and-away season.  Cold, clear and breezy conditions await in the city of churches, but rugged up fans will be out to try to help the Crows find a win, undoubtedly.

Adelaide have 8 changes incredibly for this clash, with 4 players not selected from the 22-man squad that were flogged by the Roos and 4 more being rested due to the congested fixture list.  Gibbs and Strachan and Knight and Atkins fall into the not-selected category, while those resting are McPherson, Hartigan, McAdam and Stengle.  Schoenberg, Fogarty and Scholl all start from bench in their new opportunities in the Crows top team, as does David Mackay.  McAsey will start at Half Forward, flanked by another new-comer McHenry, while Taylor Walker is a welcome return at Full Forward, and Doedee misses just 1 match as he is named at Half Back.  Melbourne have Pickett unavailable due to injury, and did not select Hannan, Oscar McDonald or Tom McDonald. VandenBerg and Neal-Bullen return via the interchange bench and Tomlinson will feature in the new-look Midfield for coach Goodwin, while Bennell again returns as a Forward Pocket option.

Last June this teams played out a high-scoring thriller, with the Crows prevailing 90-88, thanks to a 5-goals-to-1 final term, up in Darwin, as these teams have regularly taken games to the Territory.  Adelaide do have the better record between the sides, winning 25 from 40 against the Demons who have not been a top team for much of the life of the Crows in the AFL competition.  Melbourne are $1.36 favourites to continue pouring misery on the winless Crows season, while Adelaide are $3.20, with a predicted margin of around 3 goals.  Melbourne ought to win this and make a statement if they are to make anything out of the 2020 season, with a loss now all but sinking any hope they have.

PREDICTION: Melbourne by 20+.

BETTING TIP: $4.25 seems like a decent return for the 40+ margin market, though perhaps a little optimistic.
